Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 1st century BCE. A mold-made terracotta head from a votive sculpture of Ganymede, the youth so beautiful that Zeus transformed into an eagle to abduct him and bring him to Mount Olympus. Here he is depicted with youthful features and a massive head of hair that is slightly wavy and hangs to the shoulders. Atop his head is a Phrygian cap with a zoomorphic form that looks like an eagle. Two large leaf-shaped finials are at its top, flanking what looks like the head of the eagle. Size: 1.7" W x 2.9" H (4.3 cm x 7.4 cm); 5.1" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.
