Description:

Western Greece, mid-4th century BCE. Clay, matt red glaze. Head hand modeled, conical body made with the potter's wheel. Expressive head. Tusks clearly visible. Protruding eyes, small spoon-shaped ears. A ridge separates the head from the body. 6-3/4"L (16.9 cm).

Provenance: Formerly private collection of Leo Mildenberg (1913-2001), inv.-no. M 833.

For the shape of the head, cf. a similar vessel with glazed head in H. Hoffmann, Tarentine Rhyta (Mainz 1966) 52ff., pl. 33.1-2,4. Unglazed: ibid., pl. 57-3. The atypical, conical body of the vessel and the missing handle indicate that it served as a drinking horn.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Re-assembled, with traces of paint on snout and body of vessel, crest missing.
