Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, Gnathian Teano Ware, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A beautiful example of Teano-ware, most likely produced in Teano, Italy. This is a pyxis complete with lid, a round box with a separate lid. It bears similarities to a lekanis, a low, lidded bowl, but lack the twin handles and broad foot that most scholars attribute as a lekanis. The body of the vessel is decorated with fine abstract incised red designs. A deep black pigment forms the majority of the color on the vessel, and with age it has gained an absolutely gorgeous iridescent patina, particularly on the interior of the bowl, where it looks like polished hematite. Size: 3.45" W x 2.8" H (8.8 cm x 7.1 cm)
