Ancient Greece, Magna Graecia, ca. 4th to 3rd century CE. An elegant, miniature pottery head from a Tanagra type female figure, depicting either a female character from the New Comedy of Menander or a fashionable, mortal woman, as this was the emphasis of Tanagras as opposed to depicting gods and goddesses. She presents an elaborate coiffure comprised of wavy hair and a serene expression comprised of naturalistic features including open, almond-shaped eyes, a straight, noble nose, and full lips. Black, wood block mount. Size: head itself measures 1.375" W x 1.125" H (3.5 cm x 2.9 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) with mount.
