Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed pottery guttos (oil pouring vessel), the body of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a large footed base, rounded sides with a repeating linear pattern, a single diagonal spout, a smooth ring-shaped handle attached to the upper wall, flat shoulders with a repeating wave-like undulating motif, and a depiction of a recumbent male figure where a circular strainer is usually seen. A guttos like this would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to keep their oil lamps constantly full and burning bright. Lucite display stand not included. Size: 5.375" L x 5.5" W x 4" H (13.7 cm x 14 cm x 10.2 cm).
