Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic colonies, ca. 4th century BCE. A bichrome pottery bell krater, a vessel used for mixing water and wine, of a traditional form with upraised twin loop handles emerging from the bell-shaped body with a dramatically flared rim, all upon a tiered pedestal base that leads to a cylindrical stem. The exterior walls are decorated with six stylized leaf or feather motifs (a trio gracing each side) and slender linear bands. Kraters were oftentimes used at symposia or special banquets. In ancient Greek society, it was crucial to mix wine with water, as drinking undiluted wine was seen as the actions of a drunkard. Size: 7.5" W x 8.125" H (19 cm x 20.6 cm)
