Description:

Western Greece, Rhodes, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to early 5th century BCE. A beautiful mold-formed terracotta protome fragment depicting the elegant face of a goddess. The woman presents with finely-modeled facial features including slanted almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, rounded cheeks, and a lovely Archaic smile, and a smooth brow, all beneath a fringe of neatly-manicured curls and a simple headdress. Protomes and faces like this example were first made in Rhodes, but from the early 5th century onwards they spread throughout Greece. Originally, this piece would have been painted in bright pigments to further accentuate its refined beauty. Size: 6.375" W x 6.4" H (16.2 cm x 16.3 cm); 7.3" H (18.5 cm) on included custom stand.
