Description:

Ancient Greece, Rhodes, late Archaic period, ca. early 5th century BCE. A mold-formed pottery depiction of a female seated upon a straight-backed throne. The woman wears a lengthy himation with both arms laid neatly upon her legs, with rounded breasts visible above her smooth abdomen. Petite almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, and an Archaic smile comprise her elegant countenance, and her neatly-arranged coiffure is capped with a simple cap and a flowing veil. The figure is covered in chalky-white pigmentation which was perhaps at one time further painted with bright pigments. This figural example was likely created for funerary contexts based on the stoic yet composed appearance of the woman. Size: 3.75" W x 7.125" H (9.5 cm x 18.1 cm).
