Description:

Greek Empire, Island of Rhodes, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A stunning pottery aryballos - a small jar used to hold perfumes and unguents in the bath - in the form of a standing deer. Buff terracotta with black spots, short tail extending from the rear, long thin neck with separately molded head acting as the stopper. Rhodes was well known for creating some of the finest, most whimsical examples of these vessels with shapes including hedgehogs, boars, soldiers, seashells and more. A truly lovely example! Size: with head - 4.125" L x 5.5" H (10.5 cm x 14 cm); without head 2.875" L x 4.5" H (7.3 cm x 11.4 cm)

  • Condition: There are small losses of paint around rim. Head may not belong, as it is a bit small for the neck opening. Still a wonderful and very rare example.
