Greece, Caria Islands, Rhodes, ca. 150 to 125 BCE. An extremely fine silver drachm of the plinthophoric series, struck under the magistrate Thrasymenes. Obverse: radiate head of Helios to right. Reverse: "P - O" either side of rose stem, with bud to right and palm branch to left. HGC 6, 1458. Jenkins Rhodian Group C, 69. The rose was a symbol and visual pun on the city name "Rhodos" (Rhodes) so that even illiterate citizens could identify the coin's origin! Size: 0.62" Diameter (1.6 cm); silver quality: 98.5% weight: 3 grams
