Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely black glazed pottery guttus (or guttos, used as an oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a squat, fluted body, a single ring handle, and a central rising spout with a tiered rim. The central tondo displays the relief image of a seated figure, dressed in a tunic and Phrygian cap, with his back to the viewer, showing his legs drawn up and left arm raised as he places his weight on his right, as though about to get up. A series of incised, parallel striations encircle the shoulder of the elegant vessel. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 3.875" H (11.4 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
