Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. first half of the 4th century BCE. A gorgeous example of a lekythos (oil pouring vessel) with a long, thin neck ending in a conical, bell-like mouth and rim; a delicate strap handle rises in a curve from the shoulder up to lower neck. The piece sits on a flat base with a slightly rolled border. It is glazed in a deep, glossy black that has attained a beautiful iridescent patina. The broad, gently-curved shoulder has an elegant stamped motif of repeated sprigs that seem to hang from the base of the neck. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 3.55" W x 3" H (9 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex Charles Ede, London, England; ex collection of Mr. and Mrs. L. Cassiers, Brussels, Belgium, acquired 1970 to 1980
