Pamphylia was a region of Asia Minor that ran from the Mediterranean to Mount Taurus, and Side was an ancient city within the region located on the southwestern coast of modern day Turkey. Alexander the Great captured Side and made it a Greek city-state, although it retained some independence. Its independence meant that it was open to harboring pirates and its market at the time this coin was minted was full of goods - and people - being traded by pirates.
