Classical Antiquities. South Italic, Paestan, attributed to the Asteas-Python workshop, ca. 350 to 330 BCE. An exquisite lebes gamikos presenting a fine form decorated via the red-figure technique. The lebes gamikos, also known as a nuptial lebes, is a form used during ancient marriage ceremonies. Its name literally means marriage vase. Scholars suggest that such vessels were used to ritualistically sprinkle the bride with water prior to the wedding. The form is comprised of a large rounded body with twin upturned, ridged handles (the ridges cresting to a point at the pinnacle), a flat shoulder, and a lid with a spool-like finial, all on a round base. Both sides feature a profile female head facing left, one wearing a dotted kekryphalos, the other wearing a dotted headband (sphendone). In addition large palmettes beneath the handles flank the visages, tongues adorn the shoulder, and the lid presents abstract palmettes on the upper surface, bead-and-reel on the rim, and striations on the finial. Nice white details in fugitive paint also add to the decorative program. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 6.25" H (10.5 cm x 15.9 cm)
