Description:

Greece, Mycenaean Period, Late Bronze Age II, ca. 1450 to 1200 BCE. An elegant ceramic vessel, made for holding trade items, with an amphora-like shape comprised of a rounded body that tapers to a small, flat foot, double strap handles, and a corseted neck with flared rim. The rim, however, is sealed shut. At one side, equidistant between the handles, is a small spout with a broad trefoil rim. The body is painted with a dense geometric pattern in black on the buff-colored surface. Much of this paint is obscured by encrusted deposits that suggest this item was lost in a shipwreck and lay in seawater for a long period of time. Size: 4.65" W x 5.55" H (11.8 cm x 14.1 cm)

#146875

  • Condition: Small, stable hairline fracture along the top of the vessel that seems to be a result of the kiln rather than post-firing damage. Small losses from sides and from rim of spout. Interesting encrusted patina over much of the surface that looks like the piece was deposited in seawater.
