Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A redware pottery bowl embellished with several registers of impressive abstract designs in low relief around the exterior walls to the base. From top to bottom, this vessel presents registers of repeated tongues, two beaded bands surrounding an egg and dart variant, a floral band comprised of open petaled blossoms alternating with stemmed tulips, another beaded band, a band of four acanthus leaves alternating with wavy tendrils, and finally, one open-petaled blossom surrounded by a beaded border on the base. Bowls like this one were used as drinking cups, replacing the kantharos. Scholars believe that such ornate Megarian style bowls were modeled upon the forms and designs of luxurious metal bowls. Size: 5.375" in diameter x 3.375" H (13.7 cm x 8.6 cm)
