Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic colonies, Apulia or Campania, ca. 360 to 325 BCE. A simple yet elegant wheel-thrown ceramic plate with a squat footed base, a wide upper surface with an overhanging rim, and a recessed central tondo. The majority of the dish is covered in a thin black glaze with some areas exhibiting faint areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence. Plates like this were typically decorated with stylized depictions of aquatic life such as fish and squids. Cooked sea creatures were then arranged around the central tondo which would contain garum, a potent fermented fish sauce. Size: 7.05" W x 1.6" H (17.9 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in May 2017; ex-Chiltern Antiquities, High Wycombe, UK

#153270

  • Condition: Intact with light deposits on the surface. Interestingly, the black glaze seems to have not been applied as thickly as on most examples, so the buff red of the pottery shines through.
