Description:

Ancient Art. Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. An earthenware votive figure of the goddess Aphrodite, mold-made and hollow. She stands on a cube pedestal, nude, with her arms raised, holding her hair. Her coiffure is well-formed, curled on top of her head, with twin long plaits. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, sex, and beauty, is depicted here (as she always was) with the ideal Greek body - small, perky breasts, a narrow waist, and elaborately done long hair. This votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar, given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess, or placed in a grave. Size: 1.75" L x 3.75" W x 10.1" H (4.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 25.7 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
