Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A wheel-thrown buffware volute krater of classical form in a pale orange slip with two signature strap handles. Perhaps an unfinished vessel because of its bare surface, the vessel is a quaint showcase of the disciplined skillfulness of Greek potters of the era. The surface is smooth with seamless curvatures that delineate a tapered discoidal foot from a bulbous spherical body. The neck is slightly concaved, with a gentle flare of its lip completing an overall regal presence. A very nice example! Size: 5.25" W x 5.5" H (13.3 cm x 14 cm)

The volute-krater is named after its handles – usually tightly curled at its top so that they mimic Ionic columns. Early examples of the fourth and fifth centuries, like this piece, were much slimmer than then the typical Athenian form potters later adopted in the sixth century.
