Description:

Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 2nd century CE. A gorgeous, heavy silver jug with a bulbous body, a flat, applied handle, a disc foot, and a flared, rolled rim. Two thick bands of silver, each incised with triangular and circular motifs, ring around the widest part of the body and the upper part of the shoulder. The handle has two curled floral motifs where it meets the body, and a triangular motif where it meets the rim. Silver items in upper class Greek households became popular following the appropriation of the rich Persian treasury by Alexander the Great in the summer of 334 BCE.
