Description:

Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. A beautiful askos, a vessel with a flattened, triangular body and a projecting tubular spout at one end. The spout has a scalloped rim and two tightly curved trifurcated handles rising from the body to meet the base of the neck. Applied concentric circular motifs adorn the junctures where each handle joins the neck, creating a zoomorphic appearance - almost like an octopus with the handles acting as tentacles. Size: 9.5" L x 5.9" W x 4.2" H (24.1 cm x 15 cm x 10.7 cm)

The vessel is slipped with a deep red pigment, much of which remains. It also has some iron patina on its underside, giving us a clue to its use, as this vessel was made to be placed in a tomb, perhaps alongside an iron sword that left its patina on the body.
