Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery vessel for serving wine known as a lagynos. The vessel has a squat foot, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a cylindrical neck with a thick rim, and a trifurcated strap handle. The vessel's pale orange hue was at one time covered with yellow-white slip as shown on the shoulder along with dark brown concentric rings on the body and a register of slender petaloid forms encircling the shoulder. A lovely example of Hellenistic utilitarian artistry! Size: 4.2" W x 6.7" H (10.7 cm x 17 cm)

For another example of a Hellenistic lagynos with very similar painted decorations, please see The Mediterranean Museum, National Museum of World Culture, inventory number NM Ant 0199.
