Description:

Greece, probably Tanagra, Boeotia, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A head from the naturalistic tradition of pottery that is best known from Tanagra, where figurines like the one that had this for a head have been found in the hundreds. The majority of these figures depict fashionable women, as shown here -a head with a sensitive face and an elaborate coiffure. Figures like this one represented a break in tradition from earlier small statuary, which had had a religious function - these instead present a world of mortal women, perhaps originating from the New Comedy of Menander. Size: 1.95" W x 3.05" H (5 cm x 7.7 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.
