Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, probably Tanagra, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A head from the naturalistic tradition of pottery that is best known from Tanagra, where figurines like the one that had this for a head have been found in tombs. The majority of these figures depict fashionable women, as shown here - a head with a sensitive face and an elaborate coiffure, in her case including a tri-spiked diadem. Figures like this one represented a break in tradition from earlier small statuary, which had had a religious function - these instead present a world of mortal women, perhaps originating from the New Comedy of Menander. Size: 1.1" W x 2.85" H (2.8 cm x 7.2 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
