Greece, ca. 3rd to 1st Century BCE. Depicting Zeus in the form of an eagle carrying the youthful Ganymede, the eagle grasping the boy's back, with outstretched wings, the youth depicted nude but for a chlamys draped over the shoulders, with one arm raised and the other at his side, a foliate wreath in his hair, preserving traces of white color overall. Some remaining white surface pigment with traces of pink. Size: 8-7/8 inches Height. Custom lucite base. According to ancient Greek mythology Ganymede was abducted by Zeus from Mount Ida in Phrygia. Zeus either sending an eagle or turning himself into an eagle transported Ganymede to Mount Olympus. Provenance: Ex. Harvey Sarner collection, ex. Christies, NYC., June 1981.
