Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd century BCE. An elegant, simply formed krater, a vessel for mixing water and wine. Made of ceramic with a pale beige pigment applied to its surface, its symmetry is incredibly pleasing to the eye. It has a bulbous body standing on a round, flat, unpronounced foot. The body widens in an apple-shape and then corsets slightly at its thick neck before flaring outward to a flat rim. On either side are two handles composed of twin columns attached to the mid-shoulder that fold at a ninety degree angle and flatten into trapezoidal projections from the rim itself. This item probably graced a grave, created to hold an offering for eternity. Size: 8.45" W x 8.5" H (21.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
