Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A redware pottery bowl resting atop a circular base adorned with a ring of flower petals within concentric circles. A register of raised phytomorphic forms resembling hearts is shown above several registers of repeating floral motifs. The entire bowl is covered in a red-orange slip, though age and environmental conditions have worn the vermilion color along the rim into reveal the clay body below. Pattern-molded bowls like this example were used as drinking cups and eventually replaced the kantharos. Scholars posit that such ornate Megarian bowls were modeled upon the forms and designs of luxurious metal bowls. Size: 4.95" Diameter x 2.625" H (12.6 cm x 6.7 cm).
