Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A finely-carved votive cow shaped from chalky-white limestone. The stocky body stands atop delineated legs, has a sinuous tail with a bushy tip wrapping around one back leg, and has a hemispherical protrusion beneath the abdomen upon which are 7 impressed circular 'udders.' The conical head boasts almond-shaped eyes, a wavy dewlap, a short snout, and a broad forehead. Faint traces of blue-green pigment are visible across the body and suggests the figurine was at one time colored with vivid pigmentation. Size: 3" L x 1.125" W x 1.8" H (7.6 cm x 2.9 cm x 4.6 cm).
