Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A hand-carved limestone panel depicting the head of a female gorgon in relief. The face is defined by wide ovoid eyes with circular pupils beneath slender brows, a narrow nose flanked by puffy cheeks, a rounded chin, and a gaping mouth. The head is topped with flowing bangs which elegantly frame her countenance. Gorgons, terrifying figures whose gaze could turn men to stone, were very popular Greek images and were important apotropaic symbols for warding against bad luck or evil influences. Size: 4.95" W x 3.7" H (12.6 cm x 9.4 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.
