Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A beautifully symmetrical cast bronze phiale, a special libation bowl used for holding wine, with a rounded base, a gently corseted neck, and a flared rim. Age has given the bowl a gorgeous mottled green and turquoise patina. Libation bowls, known as phiale, were used across a wide geographical area - from Greece to Tibet, throughout the ancient Near East and Central Asia. These shallow bowls for holding wine in ritual and ceremonial settings were made from many materials - glass, ceramic, and many kinds of metal including bronze. Size: 4.6" W x 2.2" H (11.7 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Roy Green, Birmingham, Alabama acquired before 2015 from major New York galleries
