Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. An exquisite pair of 18K+ gold earrings (77% gold) of a flared form, perhaps to represent a horn or trumpet. The Greek salpinx (trumpet), created during Homer's time, consisted of a long tube that ended in a pronounced tulip-shaped bell. It was used to give signals to crowds during athletic competitions or to coordinate teamwork or issue military commands. Surprisingly, it was less often used for strictly musical performances or rituals. Though these earrings are not straight like the salphinx, the narrow cylindrical form leading to the flared end suggests that the salphinx may have been an inspiration. A very special matching pair of earrings with a musical theme from ancient Greece. Size of one (they are nearly identical): 1.75" diameter (4.4 cm); total weight: 10.9 grams; gold quality: 77%,equivalent to 18K+.
