Description:

Greece, Geometric /Archaic Period, ca. 8th to 5th century BCE; Central Europe, Hallstatt / La Tene culture, ca. 8th to 1st century BCE. A collection of 24 assorted bronze Greek medallions and ornaments for wearing on a belt or clothing - one has small tines and may have been a Hallstatt hair comb / beard pick pendant. Most of the votives are known as labrys, a symmetrical double-bladed axe. Rarely used in battle, the form has been associated with the symbolism of goddesses since the Minoan period at least, and later with Athena. Belts and clothing with bronze and other precious metals signified the status of their wearer, and they were buried with bronze finery such as these ornaments. Size of large disc: 1.25" Diameter (3.2 cm)
