Description:

Greece, Syracuse, ca. 317 to 289 BCE. A gold (AU) sixth stater minted during Agothokles reign. Obv: Female head of the nymph Arethusa. Rev: inscribed, above grazing bullweight. Size: .375" W (1 cm); 1.5 grams

Agothokles, born in Thermae to lowly circumstances in 361 BCE, left the home of his pottery manufacturing father and became an officer in the army in Syracuse. By 317 BCE, he had become such a successful military figure that he was able to overthrow the rulers of Syracuse and, with popular support, became a dictator. He made Syracuse a great military power and, emulating Alexander the Great, attempted to make himself an emperor, including invading Carthage - paving the way for the Romans' success in the Second Punic War.
