Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, Gnathia, ca. 330 BCE. An attractive trefoil-lipped oinochoe (also spelled oenochoe) created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to black glazed vessels, most likely used for wine. The surface decoration adorning the neck and shoulder features beautifully painted white and yellow grapevines and tendrils separated by a red band, and higher up, a band of delicate egg and dart variant with a dotted pattern underscoring it. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skillful technique and an overall polychromatic effect characteristic of Gnathia with amazing silvery iridescence to the black ground. Size: 8" H (20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of Mr. & Mrs. Dalen Bayes, Washington, USA; ex-Sands of Time, Kemah Texas, USA; private Australian collection since 1970s, #GP404
