Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, Gnathian Teano Ware, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. With a trefoil lip and a thin strap handle, this lekythos (vessel for pouring oil) has a pretty, delicate appearance. It stands on a slightly pronounced, flat foot. The body is decorated with a motif of grapes on vines. Apulian vase painters created this style, Gnathian ware, where the entire vessel was glazed black, then painted on in red, creamy white, and orange/yellow. This was perfected in the town of Gnathia (present-day Egnazia), on the Adriatic coast in Apulia. The black glaze is probably designed to look like bronze. Size: 3.05" W x 5.25" H (7.7 cm x 13.3 cm)
