Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulian, Gnathian, ca. 360 to 325 BCE. A beautiful footed bowl decorated in the classic Gnathian polychrome manner. Most notable, the artist actually painted handles in beautiful goldenrod-yellow hues - one on each side. Between the 'handles' on one side is a wide register featuring a berried ivy leaf vine framed by an incised linear wheel mark painted claret red followed by a wavy white line adorned by salmon-pink buds below. The fugitive pigmentation is presented atop a black ground that imbues the vessel with a fine presentation. A lovely example of the refined polychromatic effect characteristic of ancient Gnathian artistry! Size: 3.9" W x 2.4" H (9.9 cm x 6.1 cm).
