Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 360 to 325 BCE, probably 360 to 350. A "duck-shaped" askos, made from ceramic, with a long, ovoid body with two spouts - one very long and thin, the other with a very wide, flaring rim atop a narrow neck. A thin, curved handle is between the two spouts. The "front" of the vessel below the wide-mouthed spout has an image of a lone bird - seemingly an eagle or other raptor from its shape - standing underneath a grape vine heavy with fruit. Two long red cones hang from the vine on either side of the bird. Size: 5" W x 4.6" H (12.7 cm x 11.7 cm)
Apulian vase painters created this style, Gnathian ware, where the entire vessel was glazed black, then painted on in red, creamy white, and orange/yellow. This was perfected in the town of Gnathia (present-day Egnazia), on the Adriatic coast in Apulia. The black glaze is probably designed to look like bronze. The single figure of the bird, painted in isolation, suggests that this is one of the earlier examples of Gnathian style.

- Condition: Loss to end of tiny spout, but otherwise in beautiful condition, with excellent preservation of motifs and pigment. Slight iridescent patina.
