Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful pottery pouring vessel known as an epichysis, boasting an elegant form meticulously hand-painted with elaborate designs in white and pink fugitive pigments atop a black glaze. The ancient vessel possesses a characteristically spool-shaped base with a slender spout and a tall, arching loop handle with applied twin maskettes where the handle connects to the spout. The lower body displays 3 black bands on bare terracotta. A tongued pattern embellishes the upper rim, surrounding a ring of S-motifs and a wreath of laurel leaves with a quatrefoil at the center. The base of the neck is additionally adorned by a ring of dots encompassing a row of rays. Size: 3.6" Diameter x 6.5" H (9.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Gnathia ware is named for the site where it was first discovered - the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is traditionally decorated with floral motifs in red, white, and/or yellow hues. Scholars believe that its production most likely was centered around Taras, with primary workshops in Egnathia and Canosa. The quantity and quality of Greek colonial Apulian potters increased significantly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports dramatically decreased. Apulian artistry demonstrates influences of Ionian (Athenian, Attic) conventions, as well as Doric (western colonial Greek) styles, with a palpable native Italian aesthetic.
