Description:

Southeastern Italian, Gnathia (modern day Apulia), 4th century BCE. This is a black-glazed pottery pelike with grooved vertical lines down its body and yellow and white decoration on the neck. The handles are curved and thin and the foot and mouth are wide and splayed. The pelike is a distinctive vessel produced throughout the Greek cultural zone during this time period that has a sagging belly, twin handles, and a wide, flat, flared rim. Artwork from the time shows that these were drinking vessels. Size: 5.2" H (13.2 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Frank Sternberg, Zurich, Switzerland, collected between 1980-1985.
