Description:

Greece, Geometric period, ca. 8th century BCE. A large, cast bronze pendant with a flaring discoid form at its center, a thick loop rising from its center. At each horizontal terminal is a thin disc roughly half the diameter of the central disc, topped by a perching bird. Shallow round divots on the terminals may have once held inlays. The abstract, perching bird form is seen on a variety of pendants, vessels, and other bronze items from this time period - perhaps an allusion to the Greek practice of ornithomancy, divination from the flight and cries of birds. Size: 3" W x 2.45" H (7.6 cm x 6.2 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
