Description:

Northern Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A fine example of this early Greek bronze votive vessel. The pyxis is defined by a bulbous body decorated around the shoulder with incised zigzagging lines, a matching "sickle-form" lid, and a small foot. The lid fits neatly on the vessel's shoulder and would have been suspended from a pair of small lug handles to disperse the scent of precious oils around temples. Vessels like this example are most likely from Macedonia, though other examples have been found near Samos. Size: 2" W x 2.5" H (5.1 cm x 6.4 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger Auction 286 - Objects (February 5-8, 2011, lot 692); ex-private Austrian collection
