Description:

Greek South Italic Colonies, Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A tall, round ceramic vessel with a bulbous body, a wide, flat rim, and a tall, triangular, strap handle. The body is decorated with bands of brown and earthy red on a buff background; these bands are sometimes called listati. Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. The shapes of the vessels remained strongly influenced by the Italians - this one, for example, is a form of the Greek kyathos, or dipper, with a flat, long, looping handle, but the wideness of the strap is purely Daunian in style. Size: 6.6" W x 8.9" H (16.8 cm x 22.6 cm)

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA acquired between 1965 and 1980
