Magna Graecia, Daunian Culture, Ca. 5th - 4th Century BCE. Large terracotta jug with tall handle; bulbous body tapers into a flared rim with a horned owl handle. Beneath horns of the handle are three ancient holes, symbolic of owl eyes. Vessel is slipped in white, with added black and red-brown pigment, forming a linear design around vessel and a geometric design on handle. 10"H. Provenance: Ex-Private Australian Collection, acquired from Robert Peters, New York City Gallery, October 31st, 1993.
