Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia / Daunian, ca. 400 to 300 BCE. A ceramic askos of an elegant form, this ancient vessel used to pour small quantities of precious liquids such as oil, possessing a characteristic flattened spout and high strap handle, though this example's near spherical body departs from more common flat forms. The surface of this piece is handsomely painted with black stylized geometrics and striations on a white ground. Size: 6.75" in diameter x 7.75" H (17.1 cm x 19.7 cm)

As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery, while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery, is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones as we see in this intriguing example.
