Description:

Greece, Corinth, 5th century BCE. This is a painted pottery skyphos, a dual-handled, deep cup with a low flanged base, used for drinking wine. The design originated in Corinth and spread throughout Greece. This one is ringed with black and red paint on its flared lip; it sits on a petite, unglazed foot. The exterior has a painted decoration of stylized birds - peacocks or swans (birds with lots of tail feathers!) and owls - on a buff, unglazed pottery surface.
