Description:

Greece, Corinthia, ca. 6th century BCE. A very attractive aryballos (a vessel used to hold scented oils and perfumes in the bath) of a classic globular form with a circular flat rim and a single wide strap handle. The body is decorated with a pair of large roosters surrounded by abstract floral/foliage motifs in red and black pigments with incised details. In addition, a radiating ray/petal pattern adorns the face of the rim and the circular depression on the base. What's more, stylized, perhaps calligraphic, characters embellish the rim's straight walls. A lovely example. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 4.125" H (10.5 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: private Carlton Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
