Starts at $100 - An excellent Corinthian Aryballos from ancient Greece, circa 600 - 550 B.C. Measures approximately 2 1/4" tall by about 1 3/4" wide. This delicate and fine example features five distinct designs around the shoulder of the vessel, with geometric decoration on the body and top of the rim lip. The designs on the shoulder are most interesting, and appear to depict a kneeling human, a tailed four-legged animal (perhaps a horse), what appears to be a solar symbol, a running or dancing human, and another tailed zoomorphic figure of undetermined identity. The squat form of the globular body indicates that this is an Aryballos, used by ancient Greek men to hold scented oils or perfumes. Similar examples with more elongated, slender bodies are referred to as Alabastrons, which were used by Greek women for similar purposes. Provenance: Former North Carolina, USA collection. - Condition: Restoration to part of the bottom of the vessel, with minimal paint touch-ups only to complete the discernable designs, where needed. Otherwise, minor spalling and flaking, with heavy mineral deposits remaining- evidence of the age and authenticity of this piece.
