Canosa, Southern Italy, Ca. 4th Century BCE. A Greek Canosan burial urn slipped in red with added white paint. Volute Krater stands on a high pedestal and has two handles that extend above rim with decorated volutes. Side A depicts a warrior with shield and sword, presumably the person to whom this piece belonged. Added white geometrical objects above and beside the warrior, who is framed in an Ionic naiskos. Side B depicts a floral and astronomical scene with a star in the right corner. Each volute has a flower bud. 16-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex Private New York Collection; Ex-Edgar L Owen Gallery, NJ.
