Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, Canosa, ca. 325 BCE. An elegant ceramic kantharos on tall foot with a wide disc base. The deep, steep-walled cup has a flaring rim and twin handles that rise above the sides in curlicues before meeting the top of the rim. This beautiful vessel was once painted in added pink and blue over a chalky white background, some of which is still visible today. The kantharos form can be traced as far back as the 8th century BCE, and in later times they feature prominently on black- and red-figure vases, often carried by Dionysus or Herakles. Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. The clay is buff, with the decoration applied directly to it without the use of slip. Size: 7.25" W x 10.6" H (18.4 cm x 26.9 cm)
