Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosa, early Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century BCE. A beautiful mold-formed figure of a woman, depicted in long flowing garments, and presenting a dance-like pose with raised arms, a slightly backwards lean, and her head turned to the side. The lovely lady's face is delineated with delicate features and crowned by a centrally-parted coiffure that is tastefully pulled back. The figure has been painted in white and pink hues. A captivating representation of feminine beauty during the Classical era! Size: 7.75" H (19.7 cm)
Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. Rather than red-figure or black-figure techniques, the entire buff body was adorned by bright pigments - in this case of white and pink hues.
